Patriot Insurance Company began business in 1966 as a subsidiary of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maine.
The company was originally called Blue Alliance Mutual d/b/a/ Patriot Mutual Insurance Company and wrote health insurance products.
In 2000, Anthem, Inc. purchased Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maine and Patriot Mutual became an independent company.
The corporate offices were moved to Brunswick, Maine.
On January 1, 2002 the company grew substantially by entering the property and casualty insurance business.
This was accomplished through the acquisition of another insurance company's automobile and homeowner business in Maine,
New Hampshire, and Vermont. Lincoln J. Merrill, Jr., CPCU was hired as President to coordinate building the infrastructure to
support this expansion. Written premium volume grew steadily and the company reached $38,000,000 in sales in 2006.
In July 2006 Patriot Mutual Insurance Company announced it had entered an agreement to merge with Frankenmuth Insurance
of Frankenmuth, Michigan. The merger would allow Patriot to grow in size by adding business products to the personal lines products already being sold.
Also, Patriot would be responsible for expanding operations into other states in the Northeast.
The proposed merger was approved by the Maine Bureau of Insurance who is responsible for regulating insurance companies and was effective July 1, 2007.
Patriot Insurance continues to be a Maine based insurer with offices in Yarmouth, Maine.
