Quick Answers to Common Questions

1. Will my rates go up if I have an auto accident?
For accidents where the total damage is under $2,000 we will look at your prior history of accidents and traffic violations in determining whether or not your rates will increase. If the total amount of damage for an at-fault accident is over $2,000, your rates will increase.
2. Does my deductible apply if I have my windshield repaired from a stone chip?
If your windshield can be repaired so that your vehicle continues to meet state vehicle inspection guidelines, the deductible will not be applied to your claim. The deductible will be applied if the windshield must be replaced.

3. If I rent a car while I'm on vacation, do I have coverage under my own policy for damage to other property and for the car I'm driving?
If you carry automobile liability coverage there will be coverage for damage to property of others, but that does not include the rental car you are driving. If you carry collision and other than collision coverage on your own policy, the rental vehicle you are driving will be covered for collision and other than collision damage. If you have only liability coverage on your policy, you must purchase coverage from the rental company to cover any damage to the rental car.
4. If wind blows down trees in my yard but they don't hit my house, do I have coverage to pay to remove the trees?
We do not cover the cost of removing one or more trees blown down in your yard unless the tree(s) hit a covered structure. If tree(s) hit a covered structure, we will pay for the cost of removing the tree(s) from the structure and an additional amount up to $500 to remove the tree(s) from your property.

5. Do I have coverage if I borrow my neighbor's property and accidently break it?Your Homeowner's policy will pay up to $500 for property of others damaged by you while in your care.

6. If I have damage to my house, what should I do while I wait for an adjuster to contact me?
It is important that you take steps to protect the property from further damage. You should make reasonable and necessary repairs immediately and keep records of the expenses you incur for these repairs.

7. If I hit a large pot hole in the road and damage the underside of my car, is that considered a collision?
Yes. The Personal Automobile Policy defines collision as the upset of your covered auto or its impact with another vehicle or object. The road surface would be considered an object.

8. Why do you have to put the bank's name on my claim payment?
We are required to protect the interests of the entity that holds a lien or mortgage on your property. If we fail to protect their interest and the property is not repaired following a loss, we may be held liable. If repairs have been completed and you sign a direction of payment to the repairer, including the lien holder name on the check may not be necessary.

9. If I get sued following an accident, do I have to hire an attorney?
You must notify us immediately if you are sued. We will defend you in a lawsuit for which coverage is provided by your policy and will cover the cost of your defense. You have a right to hire your own attorney to defend you for damages that may be in excess of your policy limit or are not covered by the policy.

10. If property is stolen from my home or my car, what do I need to do?
You must immediately notify the police. You must also report your claim to Patriot or your insurance agent. We will investigate the claim and ask for your list of stolen property and request documentation to support your ownership of the property and its value.

11. What is "scheduled property"?
Please notify us by following "How to Report a New Claim" under Claims Services. We will determine if your policy provides coverage based on the allegations of the complaint.
12. Does my Homeowners policy cover flood damage?
Typically Homeowners policies do not cover damage caused by flood or surface water; however you may be able to purchase an endorsement that provides some limited coverage. Contact your insurance agent for more information.
