Even though snow and cold temperatures are currently blanketing the Great Lakes region, it’s not too early for you, or your boating clients, to start thinking about getting out and enjoying the open water.  But before you leave harbor, Frankenmuth Insurance Marine wants you to be aware of a potential hazard which may prevent you from enjoying the forthcoming boating season – the mistaken use of ethanol blended gasoline.

In 2007, Congress passed the Renewable Fuel Source Act, which included a provision increasing amounts of ethanol in blended gasoline.  As a result, roadside gas stations around the country began promoting and selling “E-85” grades of gasoline – good for cars and trucks, not necessarily so for marine engines.  In fact, ethanol blends greater than 10% can cause serious damage to your boat’s fuel tank and engine.  Its use also invalidates most warranties.

Ethanol’s adverse effects to smaller motors and marine engines can include stalling, performance issues, deterioration of engine parts, rusting, clogging of fuel filters and carburetor jets, contamination of the fuel system, release of gunk and sludge throughout the engine and eventually engine “death.”

And, since survey’s from organizations like BoatUS and the Michigan Boating Industries Association indicate as many as 63% of us fuel our boats from roadside gas stations, there is an increasing potential for misfueling and eventual engine failure if we fill up with an elevated ethanol blend.

Take precautions this boating season.  Pay attention at the pump.  Be aware of the E-15 risk, and power your boat’s engine with fuel that is safe for its efficient operation.
